What is Shibuya-ku?

It is known as a "trendy place," giving it an urban image. But in fact, it's a very livable city with lots of green space!

Shibuya Ward is located in the center of Tokyo with a population of approximately 240,000. Together with Chiyoda, Minato, Chuo, and Shinjuku wards, it is referred to as one of the "Five Central Tokyo Wards." Although Shibuya may conjure up strong urban images of downtown shopping and office districts, about 10% of its area is actually occupied by green areas. Indeed, there are vast green areas such as Meiji Shrine and Yoyogi Park.

Shibuya Ward is home to some of Tokyo's most famous spots, including Shibuya, a downtown area known as a fashion center; Omotesando, Harajuku, and Sendagaya, where famous boutiques, apparel-related stores, and beauty salons are concentrated; and Ebisu and Daikanyama, fashionable neighborhoods that are the talk of the town in some way.

• The breed of the bronze statue "Hachiko" in front of Shibuya Station is an Akita dog.
• The "Shibuya Moyai Statue" at the west exit of Shibuya Station is not a "moai statue" of Easter Island, but a special product of Niijima in the Izu Islands. The meaning of moyai is "to join forces.
• The scramble intersection is crossed by more than 3,000 people at a single green light during peak hours.
• The origin of the name SHIBUYA109 is a combination of the numbers "Tokyu 10-9". It was also named after the store's opening hours at the time, which were from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• Japan's first billion-yen condominium (luxury condominium) is Co-op Olympia, located in Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo.
